Palm Kernel as Stock Feed

Palm Kernel as Stock Feed

DaPalm kernel extract is a by-product of palm oil extraction, which can be employed as a cost effective stock feed. Palm Kernel is a good source of protein and fat (for energy) and the high fiber content of palm kernel can help create a balanced diet for ruminants.

Nutritionally, palm kernel meal (PKM)offers reasonable levels of metabolisable energy (ME) and is highly fibrous, as well and providing a decent level of protein for larger ruminant livestock, like cattle.

The extra protein and fat in PKM is very useful when pasture protein and digestibility are lower, and unlike many starch-rich feeds, palm kernel meal is safe to feed to cattle, as there is no risk of acidosis.

A core reason many farmers feed Palm Kernel is that it provides their animals with a very cost-effective energy source.

It's worth noting that Palm Kernel Extract (PKE) has low palatability, and it may take cows a while to get a taste for it.

PKM Testing is important as palm kernel extract can vary by shipment, with differing levels of fat, which may change the milk fat composition - and some batches of PKE may contain higher concentrations of iron, magnesium, and phosphorus than acceptable for dairy cattle health.

Because of the environmental impact of harvesting palm oil, we ensure that we have Palm Kernel Free feeds in our range for all farmers who wish to avoid it.
